Hanger Clinic Notifies Patients of Privacy Incident

On October 11, 2022, Hanger Clinic became aware of suspicious activity involving the Microsoft 365 account of an employee of its subsidiary, Teter Orthotics & Prosthetics, Inc. (“Teter”). Upon learning of this activity, Hanger Clinic took immediate action to secure the account, launched an investigation, and engaged a leading forensic security firm to assist in its investigation. On November 23, 2022, Hanger Clinic determined that an unauthorized third party was able to remotely access the employee’s Microsoft 365 Teter account from August 2, 2022 to October 11, 2022. Hanger Clinic’s systems have not been accessed or impacted by this incident. Hanger Clinic searched the account for any personal information that could have been viewed, and recently learned that some patient information was contained in the account. The type of information varied for each individual, but may have included name, address, date of birth, date(s) of service, medical record number, treatment history, prescription information, insurance information, Social Security number and driver’s license number. 

Hanger Clinic is committed to taking and has taken additional steps, including changes in its processes and procedures to help reduce the likelihood of a similar event from happening in the future. At this point, Hanger Clinic is not aware of any fraud or identity theft to any individual as a result of this incident, but is nonetheless notifying impacted patients and has arranged for complimentary identity protection and credit monitoring services for those individuals whose Social Security and/or driver’s license numbers were impacted. The notice will include information on steps individuals can take to protect themselves against potential fraud or identity theft. In general, Hanger Clinic is recommending that individuals regularly monitor credit reports, account statements and benefit statements. If individuals detect any suspicious activity, they should notify the entity with which the account is maintained, and promptly report any fraudulent activity to proper law enforcement authorities, including the police and their state attorney general.
