Hanger Clinic

The Bionic Power Agilik™ is a first-of-its-kind smart orthosis that helps people with gait impairments walk more naturally and comfortably. This powered microprocessor-controlled knee-ankle-foot orthosis (MPKAFO) is designed to assist mobility—not by walking for the patient, but by actively supporting natural gait. The lightweight actuator integrates into a custom-fabricated knee-ankle-foot-orthosis (KAFO), creating a personalized system that moves with the patient.

The Agilik is a powered MPKAFO that can be used on one or both legs. It features smart onboard microprocessors that monitor a person’s muscle activity and walking pattern in real time. Based on this information, it delivers motor‑assisted support to help compensate for weakened or fatigued muscles. This technology is especially beneficial for those with knee flexion or extension weakness and those presenting with crouch gait.

How does the Agilik work?

Who can benefit from the Agilik?

In general, the Agilik is appropriate for individuals aged 5 years and older who experience:

  • Trouble standing up straight or walking with knees straight—especially over longer distances
  • Instability or risk of falling while walking due to weak thigh muscles
  • Walking patterns that cause strain or pain in the hips, back, or trunk over time
  • Reduced walking endurance—not able to walk as far as before because of muscle weakness
  • Challenges practicing repetitive, consistent walking needed to improve posture and movement

What to Expect on the Agilik Treatment Journey

Evaluation/Measurement

  1. At the first appointment (which typically takes 60-90 minutes), your orthotist will evaluate, measure, and use tools and questionnaires to assess if the Agilik may be an appropriate solution for you.
  2. Once candidacy is determined, the office staff will work to verify insurance coverage, with the goal of providing you with an understanding of their out-of-pocket costs (due to deductible and coinsurance).

Trial

  1. You will start with the Agilik trial device. This adjustable system is designed to fit a range of heights and sizes, with various thigh cuffs and footplates for customization. During the trial, you can experience how the Agilik affects your walking, including comfort, stability, and the level of assistance provided. Your Hanger Clinic orthotist will monitor your gait and adjust the device’s settings to determine if the Agilik is the best solution for you.

Fit/Delivery

  1. Upon completing fabrication of your customized Agilik, you will return to the clinic for fit and delivery. This appointment typically lasts 90 minutes. At that time, your orthotist will evaluate and adjust the brace to ensure a comfortable fit and the proper function. They will review the break-in schedule and cleaning instructions, show you how to take the brace on and off, advise how to care for your skin, and will schedule necessary follow-up appointments.

Follow-Up

  1. You will return 1-3 weeks following delivery for a follow-up appointment with your orthotist. At your appointment, the focus will be on ensuring the device is functioning properly, fits comfortably, and is helping you meet your mobility goals. Your orthotist will check that the brace fits well and doesn’t cause discomfort or skin irritation, analyze gait, and make any necessary adjustments to optimize settings. You’ll discuss how the device feels during daily activities, including any challenges and what is working well. Additionally, your orthotist will also take the time to answer questions and celebrate your accomplishments. Subsequent follow-up appointments will be made to continue ensuring proper care, function and servicing to best support your mobility goals.
