Webinar: Successful Rehabilitation of an Upper Limb Amputee

This 1.5 hour presentation highlights the key components of preprosthetic and postprosthetic management of the upper limb amputee. Participants will be guided through a prosthetic training protocol. Topics covered include edema control, desensitization, mirror therapy, prepositioning and proportional control of the terminal device, and bi-manual skills training. The partnership between the therapist and prosthetist will be highlighted as this is critical in providing a person with the most functional prosthesis. Participants will have the opportunity to meet a patient model who will demonstrate current technology. Patient and family will share personal reflections on injury and rehabilitation.
Objectives
Upon completion of this program, participant will be able to:
- Identify and implement the key components of preprosthetic and prosthetic training in the rehabilitation of the upper limb amputee
- Discuss the importance of psychological support in the grieving process
- Identify functional differences between electrically powered and body powered prostheses
- Understand why communication between therapist and prosthetist is critical in providing the patient with the most functional prosthesis
Instructor: Amy Todd, MS, OTR/L, CHT
Amy Todd holds a master’s degree in Occupational Therapy from Brenau University, and she has been practicing as an occupational and certified hand therapist for over 10 years. Amy is on the rehabilitation team and works alongside our upper limb prosthetic specialists providing care around the country.
Continuing Education Requirements: All attendees are required to attend the entire session, complete a credit request form, and evaluation following the session. Throughout the presentation learning outcomes will be assessed through instructor interaction and attendee’s participation through Q&A.
