This one hour introductory level course for PT/PTA, OT/OTA, RN, Case Managers and other health care professionals provides a detailed overview of the process of prosthetic design from the first patient evaluation through to the final fitting of the definitive prosthesis. Special focus will be on the specific steps where the therapist can provide input to ensure all aspects of the patient’s needs are being met.

Objectives

Upon completion of this program, participant will be able to:

  • Describe general pre-and postoperative management of the individual with a lower limb amputation
  • Describe the overall prosthetic process from amputation surgery to fitting of a definitive device
  • Compare and contrast the processes of transtibial prosthetic component configuration of bench, static and dynamic alignments
  • Explain the general process of donning a transtibial or transfemoral prosthesis
  • Describe general activities of physical therapy that prepare the prosthetic user for ambulation, such as: weight shifting, balance training, proprioception training and use of assistive devices

Instructor: Bob Picken, CPO

Bob Picken is an American Board Certified Prosthetist and Orthotist, an Illinois Licensed Prosthetist, Orthotist with over 35 years of experience in the field. In addition to his responsibilities as Clinic Manager of the Alsip clinic, he is a regional Upper Extremity Prosthetics Specialist. Bob has extensive experience in lower extremity and all types of Pediatric Orthotic and Prosthetic management. He frequently lectures to various groups, including universities around the area.


Continuing Education Requirements: All attendees are required to attend the entire session, complete a credit request form, and evaluation following the session. Throughout the presentation learning outcomes will be assessed through instructor interaction and attendee’s participation through Q&A.
