Overview of Spinal Orthoses
Description
This one hour introductory level course for PT/PTA, OT/OTA, RN, Case Managers and other health care professionals covers the most common adult and geriatric treatment modalities for the spine with a focus on the devices themselves. Topics will cover the introductory information of nomenclature, components, trim lines, and distinguishing functional characteristics of common spinal devices as well as make distinctions between “custom fit’ and ‘custom fabricated’ orthoses.
Course Objectives
Upon completion of this program, participants should be able to:
- Describe the difference between off-the-shelf, prefabricated and custom fabricated spinal devices
- Identify the nomenclature for spinal orthoses by recognizing the commonly used abbreviations of various spinal devices such as CO, CTO, LSO, TLSO, SOML and CASH
- Describe the common functional components of a spinal orthosis, and their respective anatomical relevance to trim lines
- List the difference types and functional use of spinal orthoses
- Describe the potential benefits and complications associated with the use of spinal orthoses
