Cranial Asymmetries: More than Circumference Measurements
Description
This one-hour introductory level course for nurses, nurse practitioners and other health care providers is designed to deepen the understanding of and ability to assess for deformational plagiocephaly. It will build upon their present responsibility for taking cranial measurements and equip them to assess the patient’s degree of asymmetry and/or disproportion and referral options. It will build their understanding of the different types and causes of skull deformities and potential care pathways.
Course Objectives
Upon completion of this program, participants should be able to:
- Explain the significance of the correlation between normal infant development and the development of positional/deformational plagiocephaly
- Describe the implications of torticollis as it relates to the development and management of deformational plagiocephaly
- Identify key features that distinguish synostotic from non-synostoic plagiocephaly
- Demonstrate/describe the procedure for obtaining standardized measurements of the infant skull
- Classify head symmetry in an infant based on assessment findings according to type (lateral versus posterior) and severity (mild, moderate and severe)
