Your Clinical Education Journey
Our residency program offers a multi-site training experience across 2–3 locations in the South Puget Sound region. Residents will develop a broad clinical skill set through exposure primarily to adult and pediatric orthotics and lower limb prosthetics, with the opportunity to spend time
alongside an upper extremity specialist. Care is provided in various settings, including the clinic, nearby hospitals, rehabilitation facilities, and outpatient therapy collaborative care appointments.
Residents benefit from mentorship by multiple CPOs and COs, each with more than 15 years of clinical experience, including specialists in pediatric care and lower limb prosthetics. Residents can expect to receive well-rounded guidance throughout their training and will learn differing approaches and practice styles.
These sites are equipped for on-site check socket fabrication, and residents will participate in regularly scheduled time at a full-service market fabrication center just 10 minutes away — providing hands-on technical training alongside clinical development.
Residents will have the opportunity to provide care at a nationally ranked rehabilitation hospital with a specialty in acute post-stroke care and a developing inpatient new prosthetic user program. Additional clinical experiences include scoliosis management and cranial remolding care.
On-call responsibilities are shared across a large rotation of clinicians, with individual on-call shifts occurring less than every six weeks — allowing residents to gain real-world experience without undue burden. Introduction to on-call occurs in progressive stages. Residents will be familiarized with hospital care initially by assisting with daytime hospital coverage before joining an experienced clinician in the on-call rotation around 6 months into residency.
Participation in ongoing research is available occasionally at these sites. Residents will also benefit from a robust and supportive network of recently certified and newer clinicians throughout the region.
Between these three clinics, you’ll spot schools of jellyfish and spawning salmon (and the occasional orca pod!) on your lunchtime stroll, get glimpses of snowy Mount Rainier and Olympic peaks on your way to and from work, and eat all the tasty sushi burritos, teriyaki, and Trader Joe’s snacks!
Combined 18-month Orthotic and Prosthetic Residency
The residency is structured by pairing a high-volume prosthetics site with rotation sites that specialize in orthotics, pediatrics, and hospital-based care. This multi-site approach ensures residents receive a well-rounded and balanced clinical experience across both orthotics and prosthetics, with exposure to a diverse range of patient populations and practice settings throughout the 18-month program.
Digital Training Experiences
TechMed scanning is a regular part of clinical practice at this site, used nearly daily for cranial remolding care and routinely for spinal orthosis fabrication, with occasional application in prosthetics. Residents gain consistent experience with scanning technology in a high-volume environment, while also learning foundational traditional fabrication and shape-modification skills.

Your Clinical Education Journey
The Portland residency is based primarily at the North Williams clinic, a well-staffed location with five CPOs, a certified orthotic fitter, and two dedicated technicians, including an on-site specialist in upper extremity prosthetics. The clinic is situated two blocks from a Level 1 trauma hospital, a children’s hospital, and the regional burn center, providing immediate access to a diverse and high-acuity patient population. The site also holds the exclusive orthotics contract for a second Level 1 trauma hospital in the area, further expanding residents’ inpatient and acute care exposure.
Residents participate primarily in outpatient clinic care while also attending appointments at multidisciplinary clinics, acute rehabilitation facilities, surgical clinics, and physical therapy settings. Clinical collaboration is a core value of the practice, and residents are actively integrated into interdisciplinary care teams throughout their training.
Rotations to two additional Portland-area offices provide exposure to different practice environments and clinical approaches, with staff including CPOs, certified assistants, and pedorthists. The site also maintains a working relationship with the local surgeon performing osseointegration procedures and collaborates with a large regional vascular surgery team, offering residents access to specialized and emerging areas of O&P practice.
Combined 18-month Orthotic and Prosthetic Residency
The clinic maintains a broadly even split of orthotic and prosthetic patient volume, giving residents a naturally balanced clinical environment. Residents work through a structured rotation with specific mentors and are encouraged to pursue patient experiences outside of their assigned mentor’s schedule as needed to maintain variety and balance. Weekly meetings with the residency director provide a consistent opportunity to review the prior week’s experiences, assess upcoming clinical opportunities, and address any gaps in exposure.
Digital Training Experiences
Digital workflows are integrated into daily clinical operations at this site, with multiple scanning platforms and CAD programs in active use. An on-site 3D printer is utilized for the majority of diagnostic socket fabrication. While digital tools are strongly encouraged and consistently applied, residents also receive ample training in traditional shape acquisition, modification, and fabrication techniques, ensuring a well-rounded and comprehensive skill set upon completion of the residency.

The Castro Valley residency is an 18-month combined orthotics and prosthetics program offering broad clinical exposure across multiple practice settings in the greater Bay Area. Residents rotate through two to three additional clinic locations, gaining experience alongside a variety of experienced clinicians and diverse patient populations throughout their training.
Inpatient hospital care is integrated into the program, providing residents with exposure to acute and post-operative patient management alongside outpatient clinic experience. Your Clinical Education Journey
The Sacramento Residency Program offers a comprehensive and collaborative combined 18-month residency experience within a long-standing group practice serving the greater Sacramento area. Based primarily in Midtown Sacramento, residents benefit from exposure to a diverse patient population and a wide range of prosthetic and orthotic presentations.
Midtown Sacramento serves as the primary office and provides exceptional prosthetic experience, including complex and varied cases as well as upper extremity prosthetics. The office features a large, in-house fabrication lab, allowing residents to gain valuable hands-on exposure to fabrication processes and collaboration with technical staff. Midtown also offers orthotics, creating a well-rounded clinical foundation.
Residents will rotate through at least two of the eight clinics within the Sacramento region. Rotations to South Sacramento emphasize expanded orthotic exposure, including pediatric orthotics, further broadening clinical skills and understanding of diverse patient needs. These rotations allow residents to shadow multiple experienced mentors, observe different clinical approaches, and gain a deeper appreciation for continuity and collaboration in patient care across offices.
The residency encourages interprofessional engagement, offering opportunities for residents to participate in in-services for other healthcare professionals. As part of an eight-clinic group practice, residents experience a strong culture of collaboration, shared learning, and coordinated patient care.
Beyond the clinic, the Sacramento offices foster a supportive and connected environment, frequently coming together for group activities and maintaining a strong bond across locations. This residency program offers an ideal balance of clinical depth, mentorship, and community within an established and respected practice.

The Hanger Clinic Fresno Residency Program offers a comprehensive 18 month combined Orthotic and Prosthetic residency designed to provide residents with broad clinical exposure and a strong foundation in patient centered care. Fresno is a high volume clinical setting with a diverse patient population, ensuring a thorough and well rounded residency experience.
The Fresno clinic sees a high volume of pediatric orthotic patients and works closely with Valley Children’s Hospital. Residents participate in two on site hospital clinics, allowing them to provide care directly within the hospital environment while collaborating closely with physicians, nurses, therapists, and other multidisciplinary team members. In addition, the clinic services three Medical Therapy Unit (MTU) offices for California Children Services (CCS) patients, offering extensive experience with pediatric neurological and orthopedic conditions.
There is also a high volume of prosthetic patients, including frequent exposure to upper extremity amputee care. Residents gain valuable experience treating a wide range of limb loss etiologies and levels. The clinic also provides services to three local hospitals, supporting patients with post amputation care, traumatic injuries, and spinal conditions, further enhancing residents’ exposure to acute and rehabilitative care settings.
Residents have the opportunity to rotate between two Fresno clinic locations and the clinic in Visalia, allowing them to work alongside and shadow multiple clinicians. This structure promotes mentorship diversity and exposure to a wide variety of diagnoses, treatment plans, and clinical approaches.
In addition to clinical training, Hanger Clinic Fresno is committed to professional education. Clinicians and residents volunteer annually with Fresno State Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) students, providing instruction in orthotics and prosthetics. Educational growth is further supported through weekly regional didactic sessions led by the Residency Director, fostering clinical knowledge, collaboration, and professional development throughout the residency.

Phoenix’s healthcare landscape adds further depth to the clinical experience. The region is home to six Level 1 trauma hospitals, Mayo Clinic Hospital, Barrow Neurological Institute, and Phoenix Children’s Hospital, exposing residents to a wide variety of pathologies, surgical cases, and patient demographics throughout their training.

As a dedicated prosthetic only environment, the clinic provides uninterrupted exposure to prosthetic care, allowing residents to build depth and confidence through a consistently full prosthetic caseload.
The orthotic clinic similarly manages a high volume of patients with diverse pathologies and specialized needs. Clinicians bring expertise in areas such as pediatrics, scoliosis, cranial remolding, and microprocessor KAFOs. Residents gain additional experience through rural and outreach clinics, as well as a hospital-based service that supports postoperative, acute, and long-term orthotic care. Close collaboration with the local children’s clinic further enhances interdisciplinary training across orthopedic, cerebral palsy, spina bifida, and spinal care programs, creating a comprehensive and well-rounded orthotic learning environment.

O&P balance is maintained through structured rotations between two clinic locations with distinct practice focuses. The Grant Street location is an orthotics-only office, providing dedicated orthotic clinical exposure, while the Speedway location specializes exclusively in prosthetics. Digital Training Experiences
Digital workflows are actively used across both orthotic and prosthetic care at this site. For orthotics, workflows include scanning adult AFO and KAFO casts for digital submission, as well as scanning and ordering foot orthoses. For prosthetics, digital tools are used to scan models for 3D-printed flexible inner sockets and frames, to capture distal transfemoral limbs for low-level candidates using pre-selected brims, and to scan and modify transtibial limbs using CAD software prior to fabrication.

Your Clinical Education Journey
The Rio Rancho office serves as the primary clinical site for the Orthotic and Prosthetic Residency Program. The residency is structured to provide comprehensive clinical training under the supervision of multiple Certified Prosthetist Orthotists (CPOs). Residents also complete planned rotations at two additional Albuquerque locations to ensure exposure to a broad range of clinical environments and mentorship opportunities. These rotations include experience in upper extremity prosthetics, an integrated hospital-based clinic, and a technical/fabrication facility.
The residency program utilizes a collaborative, team-based model of patient care. Residents work directly with multiple supervising practitioners and have daily opportunities for observation, participation, and progressive responsibility consistent with demonstrated competency. This structure supports mentorship across a variety of clinical styles and areas of expertise.
Throughout the residency, residents are exposed to a comprehensive patient population across the lifespan, including pediatric, adult, and geriatric patients. Clinical experiences occur in multiple care settings, including outpatient clinics, hospitals, rehabilitation facilities, and nursing homes; however, primary care is provided at the Hanger Clinic office. This breadth of exposure ensures residents gain experience managing a wide range of diagnoses, functional levels, and care environments.
The clinical team provides comprehensive orthotic and prosthetic services, including but not limited to scoliosis bracing, cranial remolding orthoses, custom energy storing carbon designs, and microprocessor controlled prosthetic and orthotic systems. Residents participate in all phases of patient care, including evaluation, treatment planning, device design, fitting, follow up, and outcomes assessment, in accordance with their scope of training and level of supervision.
The residency program incorporates educational and professional development activities throughout the training period. Residents have opportunities to participate in university affiliated teaching, present to interdisciplinary rehabilitation professionals (including therapists, physicians, and medical residents), and lead or participate in journal club meetings. These activities support development of clinical reasoning, communication skills, and evidence-based practice.
Advanced technology is integrated into routine clinical practice, including CAD/CAM systems, in market 3D printing capabilities, and multiple scanning technologies and interfaces. Residents receive structured exposure to these technologies to support clinical efficiency, accuracy, and modern practice standards.
The primary residency site also functions as a host location for multiple all market trainings throughout the year, providing residents with access to group education, continuing professional development, and collaboration with a broader clinical team. Residents may also participate in hospital call coverage under appropriate supervision, including post operative patient management such as wound care and triage of hospital consultations.
In addition to comprehensive clinical exposure, the residency program fosters a supportive learning environment that emphasizes collaboration, professional development, patient outcomes, and a team-based approach to care delivery. Supervision, mentorship, and feedback are provided throughout the residency to support progressive skill development and readiness for independent practice upon program completion.

The residency director actively manages scheduling templates and monitors resident caseloads on a quarterly basis to ensure appropriate balance between orthotics and prosthetics. In the early stages of the residency, schedules are controlled by the director to establish a strong clinical foundation. As residents demonstrate competency, scheduling is progressively opened to allow for greater independence, with a mentor or director available for consultation as needed. Templates are reviewed each quarter and adjusted to reflect the resident’s developmental stage and any identified gaps in exposure, including access to higher-complexity prosthetic or orthotic cases for observational learning.
Digital Training Experiences
Digital workflows are a central component of clinical practice at this site, applied consistently across a broad range of device types. Scanning is used for approximately 80% of AFOs and foot orthoses, all cranial remolding orthoses, and roughly 20% of transtibial prosthetics. CAD-by-measure is the standard approach for approximately 95% of transfemoral prosthetics. Traditional casting remains the primary method for most transtibial cases, with a gradual transition toward greater digital adoption underway. KAFOs and non-pediatric AFOs are casted at evaluation and subsequently scanned for digital fabrication submission, giving residents experience across the full spectrum of digital and traditional workflows.

The Kansas City Residency Program provides the resident a well-rounded education by having the resident rotate through seven clinics based at The University of Kansas Health System, Children’s Mercy Hospital and many other local hospitals. We believe in training residents to work side by side with our referring physicians in clinics, co-treating in therapy and learning to treat the whole person not just fit a device. Residents work with the latest technology in Upper Limb Prosthetics, OI, Pediatric Orthotics and Prosthetics. We create a community for our residents to thrive and grown in by collaborating with each other and their mentors. We have monthly journal club and resident presentations that are attended by both the residents and mentors. We also partner with the Kansas City VA and have our residents spend a week at the VA to better understand how to take care of our veterans. Residents also have the opportunity to volunteer and help our local homeless amputee population. Our team includes specialists in pediatric care and lower limb prosthetics, ensuring exposure to a wide range of clinical approaches and practice styles. This collaborative mentorship model fosters confidence, adaptability, and clinical excellence throughout training.
All clinical sites are equipped for on-site check socket fabrication utilizing advanced 3D printing technology, giving residents exposure to modern fabrication techniques. Residents also spend dedicated time at our local fabrication center, gaining essential hands-on technical skills that complement their clinical development and strengthen their understanding of the full continuum of care.
Through our embedded partnership with one of the nation’s leading rehabilitation hospital systems, ranked among the top providers for medically complex cases, residents participate in advanced patient care within a CARF-accredited environment specializing in acute post-stroke rehabilitation and prosthetic services. Additional experiences include collaboration with a pediatric specialty team at the Children’s Hospital Orthopedic Specialty Clinic, as well as clinical exposure to scoliosis management and cranial remolding therapy, providing a truly comprehensive training experience.
Residents gain real-world hospital experience through a structured, progressive on-call model. Training begins with supervised daytime hospital coverage, building comfort and familiarity with inpatient care, before transitioning into a shared on-call rotation alongside experienced clinicians approximately six months into residency. On-call responsibilities are distributed across a large team, with shifts typically occurring every 4-6 weeks, allowing for meaningful experience without excessive burden.

Prosthetic care is a major focus of the practice. Residents gain hands on experience with multiple socket designs, suspension systems, and component technologies. On site fabrication is supported by two dedicated prosthetic technicians, allowing residents to follow the full continuum of care from evaluation through delivery. While traditional casting is still utilized, the office emphasizes modern digital workflows, including scanning, digital modification, and 3D printing. A 3D printer is located in the office. Each year, the site hosts a prosthetic PEC in collaboration with a Hanger corporate prosthetic specialist, offering additional advanced learning opportunities.
Residents participate in a variety of clinical environments, including in office visits, physician clinics, physical therapy clinics, and school based settings. Weekly prosthetic clinics with Dr. Earl and multiple pediatric orthopedic clinics—including orthotic, scoliosis, neuromuscular, and multidisciplinary sessions—provide consistent exposure to collaborative care. The team also supports local special needs schools through regular on site clinics.
There are opportunities for on call experience, as the team covers two major local hospitals, managing orthotic trauma cases and post operative prosthetic care. The site maintains strong relationships with the local medical school and frequently hosts medical students for shadowing, contributing to a rich educational environment.
Residents receive frequent check ins and mentorship to support their growth. Many past residents have chosen to continue working at the site after certification. Our prosthetic and orthotic residency program provides comprehensive clinical experience in the evaluation, design, fabrication, and delivery of both orthotic and prosthetic devices for adult and pediatric populations. Residents gain hands-on exposure to a wide range of custom and off-the-shelf devices, supported by an on-site technician for in-house fabrication. The clinic’s serve multiple hospitals and rehabilitation centers across Northwest Arkansas, offering diverse patient care opportunities. Residents also participate in pediatric care at Northwest Children’s Hospital, including post-surgical casting and measurement. In addition, the program collaborates closely with the VA, broadening clinical exposure to veteran care. Residents are trained using advanced technologies, including Tech Med and Insignia scanning systems, iPad for clinical integration, and 3D printing for device fabrication.

Scheduling templates are used to manage and control the resident’s appointment calendar, ensuring that the mix of orthotic and prosthetic patient encounters is intentionally structured to meet residency exposure requirements and support balanced clinical development throughout the program.
Digital Training Experiences
This site utilizes current scanning technology across all clinic locations, including TechMed and Insignia 3D scanners as well as iPad-based scanning platforms. In addition to shape capture, clinicians design and provide 3D-printed devices to patients, giving residents hands-on experience with the full digital workflow from scan to finished device.

The Tupelo residency is a multi-clinician practice located directly across from the local hospital, providing immediate and convenient access to inpatient care and interdisciplinary collaboration throughout the residency. An on-site fabrication lab supports hands-on technical training alongside clinical development, allowing residents to follow the full continuum of care from evaluation and treatment planning through device fabrication and delivery.
In addition to the primary Tupelo location, residents gain experience at a satellite clinic in Starkville, Mississippi, broadening their exposure to varied practice settings, patient populations, and clinical presentations across the program.
Combined 18-month Orthotic and Prosthetic Residency
The residency is intentionally structured to provide comprehensive, balanced, and progressive exposure to both orthotics and prosthetics across the full 18 months. Balance is achieved through deliberate scheduling, active case volume management, collaborative clinical practice across the team, and ongoing monitoring of resident competency progress in both disciplines.
Digital Training Experiences
This site incorporates digital workflows across both clinical and design processes using iPad, iPhone, and TechMed scanning platforms for patient capture. ProteorShape and ZanderCAD are used for digital modification and fabrication preparation. While not all cases are fully digitized, digital tools are consistently integrated into everyday practice and adoption continues to expand, giving residents broad exposure to current and emerging digital workflow methods alongside traditional techniques.

The Jacksonville residency is an 18-month combined orthotics and prosthetics program embedded within a large, established group practice serving the greater Jacksonville area. The clinical team includes five mentors spanning a range of credentials and specializations, including certified prosthetists specializing in upper and lower extremity prosthetics, certified orthotists, and certified prosthetist orthotists, providing residents with diverse mentorship perspectives throughout their training.
The prosthetic caseload includes a broad range of amputation levels and presentations, with notable exposure to upper extremity prosthetics, hip disarticulations, and complex multi-level cases. On the orthotic side, residents work alongside the pediatric neurology and orthopedic team, gaining experience with halo applications, post-operative cranial helmets, scoliosis bracing, and the opportunity to observe scoliosis surgeries when appropriate. The site is actively developing training in microprocessor KAFOs and osseointegration, expanding the advanced technology exposure available to residents.
An on-site fabrication lab allows residents to follow the full continuum of care from evaluation through device delivery, developing both clinical and technical skills in parallel. Residents also participate in a collaborative amputee clinic alongside an established local rehabilitation group, providing structured experience working within a multidisciplinary team environment. The site actively engages with the broader healthcare community through interdisciplinary in-services, supporting residents in building professional relationships and communication skills across care settings.

The site has developed a structured plan to optimize the 18-month residency experience. Residents begin with two quarters focused on orthotics, followed by two quarters in prosthetics. The fifth quarter introduces a mixed caseload with guided independence, transitioning case by case from supervised to more autonomous practice. Digital Training Experiences
This site has integrated digital workflows across both orthotic and prosthetic care. For orthotics, AFOs are fabricated by casting the patient in correct alignment and scanning the resulting cast. For prosthetics, direct scanning is used where clinically appropriate; otherwise, casts are hand-fabricated, scanned, and modified digitally using CAD software. The site also utilizes an on-site carver for fabrication. Additional digital applications include scanning of post-operative and 3D-printed cranial helmets, as well as 3D-printed SMOs and KOs produced through direct patient scanning.

Our orthotics and prosthetics office is dedicated to high-quality patient care, progressive clinical workflows, and intentional clinician development. We serve a highly diverse patient population with a significant pediatric caseload, providing broad exposure to a wide range of diagnoses, functional needs, and ages.
In orthotics, we utilize modern digital processes by scanning and digitizing all physical casts whenever possible and submitting them digitally. When digital submission is not feasible, physical casts are mailed with complete work orders to ensure accuracy and continuity of care.
Prosthetics continues to transition toward digitization at a thoughtful pace while maintaining the same level of clinical supervision and quality standards. Prosthetic clinicians participate in call coverage averaging two calls per week. When taking call independently, clinicians are partnered with another experienced clinician who can provide in-person or virtual support as needed.
New clinicians and residents follow a structured onboarding and mentorship model. This includes 1–2 weeks integrated with the administrative team, followed by three months of observation alongside a supervising clinician. The next three months focus on mentored practice, allowing residents to act as lead clinicians with direct support. This is followed by three months of a limited independent schedule, progressing to managing a full schedule independently at a pace aligned with comfort and clinical competency.

The site maintains a consistent 50/50 split between orthotics and prosthetics across the full duration of the residency, ensuring residents receive equal and uninterrupted exposure to both disciplines throughout the 18-month program.
Digital Training Experiences
Orthotic workflows at this site are fully digitized — all physical casts are scanned and submitted digitally whenever possible, with physical cast shipping used only when digital submission is not feasible. Prosthetic workflows are in an earlier phase of digital adoption, with ongoing efforts to expand digital capture and submission practices. Residents gain exposure to both established digital orthotic processes and the evolving integration of digital tools in prosthetic care.

We offer a well‑rounded residency experience supported by a diverse group of mentors whose clinical strengths span the full spectrum of prosthetics and orthotics. Our team includes clinicians who primarily focus on prosthetics, others who specialize in orthotics, and several who practice a balanced combination of both. Collectively, we bring an exceptional depth of experience to the table with our least experienced CPO having 15 years of experience. We also have two CPeds with 20 years each.
Residents benefit from exposure to a wide variety of specialty cases and a healthy mix of both O and P, ensuring they develop strong clinical versatility. When we identify areas where a resident may need additional support or more concentrated experience, we are able to arrange supplemental external training to help close those gaps. Our goal is to provide a comprehensive, supportive learning environment that prepares residents to become confident, well rounded clinicians.
Combined 18-month Orthotic and Prosthetic Residency
The site has historically offered 12-month single-discipline residencies, with three dedicated days per week allocated to the secondary discipline. As 18-month combined residencies become the standard, the site is transitioning toward an evenly balanced model. The clinic is well-positioned for this shift given its naturally balanced daily caseload of both orthotic and prosthetic patients, allowing residents to gain meaningful exposure to each discipline without relocation or significant schedule restructuring.
