Embracing Possibilities: Ibrahim’s Journey with Upper Limb Prostheses

For 15-year-old Ibrahim, prosthetic technology has been more than a tool—it has been a key to independence, growth, and endless possibilities. Born without forearms, he began his journey with upper limb prostheses at just six months old, setting the foundation for a life filled with independence and achievement. Now a thriving teenager, Ibrahim continues to embrace his upper limb prosthetic technology, pursuing his passion for soccer, swimming, and learning, and proving that with the right support, anything is possible.
Starting Young: A Foundation for Independence
When Ibrahim was born without both forearms, his parents decided to introduce him to prosthetic arms as early as possible.
Ibrahim’s mom, Radwa, shared, “When Ibrahim was born with congenital bilateral amputation of the forearms, we were motivated to start with prostheses for him at an early age. We knew we wanted to give him every opportunity to perform daily tasks and live independently. At six months old, Ibrahim received his first passive upper limb prostheses.”
These prostheses encouraged interaction with his environment and balanced motor skill development, allowing him to crawl, push, pull, and use both sides of his body—essential milestones for any growing child. This early introduction helped him naturally integrate prosthetic arms into his daily life, making the transition to more advanced technology seamless.
Growing with Technology: From Passive to Myoelectric Prostheses
By 18 months old, Ibrahim had progressed to one myoelectric prosthetic arm, eventually transitioning to bilateral myoelectric arms as he grew. With guidance from Hanger Clinic prosthetist Tom Current, CPO, Ibrahim’s prosthetic technology evolved to include elbows, wrist rotators, and Covvi multi-articulating hands.
Radwa expressed her family’s gratitude for Tom, who is part of Hanger Clinic’s Upper Limb Prosthetic Specialty Network. She said, “Tom has been Ibrahim’s prosthetist since he was two years old, and his dedication has been invaluable in ensuring Ibrahim has access to the right technology as he grows. He has played a crucial role in supporting Ibrahim and our family, always going above and beyond to provide opportunities, motivation, and encouragement.

Beyond Tom’s expertise, the entire Hanger Clinic team has been an incredible source of guidance—helping us navigate insurance, paperwork, and the evolving needs of a growing child. Their support has made all the difference, and we are thankful for Tom and the team at Hanger Clinic.”
Active Lifestyle: Adapting Prostheses for Sports and Daily Life
Now 15 years old and looking forward to his sophomore year of high school, Ibrahim is embracing his independence, confidently managing daily tasks and excelling in school. His prosthetic arms have significantly enhanced his ability to fully engage in classroom activities, social interactions, and extracurricular pursuits. With each milestone, his self-esteem has flourished—reinforcing his sense of capability, confidence, and determination. His positive attitude and resilience have made him a source of inspiration to those around him.
A major factor in Ibrahim’s success lies in his adaptive mindset. Whether modifying a pen grip for writing, leveraging assistive utensils for eating, or utilizing technology for schoolwork, he continuously finds creative solutions to meet his needs. His ability to innovate and adapt showcases not just his resilience, but his deep commitment to living life without limitations.
Ibrahim also loves to swim and play soccer, and he dreams of one day becoming the captain of his high school soccer team. He uses different prostheses based on the activity. For soccer and high-contact sports, he prefers his passive prostheses. For daily tasks requiring precision, such as gripping or fine motor skills, he utilizes his myoelectric prostheses with multi-articulating hands.

Growing in Confidence and Developing Meaningful Connections
Beyond academic and athletic achievements, Ibrahim’s journey with prostheses has profoundly shaped his self-identity and strengthened his self-esteem. As he has gained more independence, he has grown increasingly confident—not just in performing daily tasks, but also in expressing himself and building meaningful connections with his peers.
“There are challenges,” Ibrahim shares, “but I’ve learned to focus on what’s possible instead of what’s missing. I choose to see opportunities, not limits.”
That confidence extends far beyond physical tasks. Ibrahim is now a young man whose family, teachers, and peers deeply admire him—not just for what he’s accomplished, but for how he carries himself—with kindness, humility, and quiet strength. His leadership qualities continue to emerge as he encourages others, embraces challenges, and sets an inspiring example for those around him.
Looking Ahead to Limitless Opportunities
Looking ahead, Ibrahim is excited about the future and eager to continue pushing boundaries—both on the soccer field and in college—as he pursues his dreams with determination and hope.
Ibrahim shared, “Upper limb prostheses have helped unlock possibilities for me. I want to show people that having a limb difference doesn’t stop you from chasing your goals. Whether it’s in sports, school, or life, you just have to believe in yourself.”
