Microprocessor Knee Ankle Foot Orthoses

Microprocessor knee-ankle-foot orthoses (MPKAFOs) are microprocessor-controlled leg orthoses with real-time responsiveness to everyday movements. They regulate stance and swing control with microprocessor technology. This provides stability and safety during various activities, such as walking on level or uneven terrain, navigating slopes, inclines, and stairs.

How do MPKAFO’s work?

MPKAFOs such as the Ottobock C-brace are made of custom-fabricated components for the thigh, calf, and foot, connected by an ankle joint or individual spring element. The sensor system continuously monitors the flexion of the knee joint and its angular acceleration. This real-time data allows the MPKAFO to accurately detect current walking phase, enabling it to adjust hydraulic resistances and control the flexion and extension of the knee joint accordingly. This technology is custom designed to support you during the entire gait cycle and adapt to everyday situations in real-time.

Benefits of MPKAFOs

Benefits of MPKAFOs include:

  • Improved balance*
  • Reduced fall risk*
  • Reduced gait compensations
  • Reduced walking fatigue

Who can benefit from MPKAFOs?

MPKAFOs may benefit those with weak knee extensors that experience one of these common primary diagnoses:

  • Spinal cord injury
  • Traumatic brain injury
  • Post-polio injury
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Charcot Marie Tooth
  • Non-spastic stroke

Depending on your functional needs and your specific condition, your orthotist will determine the best technology for you.
