Finding Strength in Shared Steps: How One Chance Encounter Led to Lifelong Friendship

When Lee lost his leg to cancer in 2023, he knew life would change forever. What he didn’t know was how much a chance encounter in a grocery store would help shape his recovery journey. Now, Lee and fellow Hanger Clinic Integrated Care Center patient Rich share a friendship built on a shared understanding of two people living with above-knee limb loss

Faced with an Impossible Choice

For Lee, the journey began with a cancer diagnosis in his leg.

“My options were to risk my life or lose my limb,” Lee said.

In March 2023, he underwent an above-knee amputation. Like many people facing limb loss, he strived to understand what life would look like following his procedure. Lee had the support of his wife, Jill, and a great relationship with his care team, who answered his questions. The physical rehabilitation was challenging, but manageable. But Lee was still missing finding his new place in a community of people who truly understood what he was experiencing.

“It’s hard to find people with firsthand experience,” shared Lee. “You can learn a lot from prosthetists and therapists, and they were very helpful, but there are all these little things that only another amputee can tell you.”

A Chance Encounter at the Grocery Store

About six months to a year after Lee received his above-knee prosthesis, Jill was shopping at a local grocery store when she spotted a man with a similar amputation to the one Lee had experienced. She took a chance and introduced herself to Rich.

“I looked up, and there he was. I wasn’t sure if I should attempt to talk to him, but I thought I might not get another opportunity like that again,” said Jill.

As they talked, they discovered they lived only five minutes apart. Rich immediately offered his support, encouraging Jill to ask Lee to join him for a walk around the neighborhood or a round of golf. Jill and Rich exchanged phone numbers, and before long, Lee made the call.

Learning From Someone Who’s Been There

Rich had been living with his above-knee amputation for 16 years and understood what Lee was going through.

“I’m not a prosthetist, but I can help from experience and my own mistakes,” said Rich.

Lee and Rich started meeting for walks, often at a nearby indoor track. Lee found answers to many of his everyday questions about living with limb loss.

“Rich was so helpful because I was able to talk to someone who has been through it,” Lee said. “What works, what doesn’t, and understanding what you might have to live with moving forward.”

The friendship quickly grew beyond mentorship.

“Jill’s chance encounter that led to meeting Rich is one of the best things that has ever happened to me,” Lee said. “I enjoy his company. We have a lot of fun and have the same sense of humor.”

The Value of Peer Support

Both Lee and Rich credit their Hanger Clinic care team, including their prosthetist, Tom O’Doherty, L/CP, for helping them stay active and continue progressing.

“I have learned as much from Tom as anyone else. He is great in supporting us and pushing us to move,” Rich said.

They also emphasize that peer connections are one of the most valuable resources available to people adjusting to limb loss.

“Meet other amputees and learn from them. Everyone’s got a different way of doing things, so there is always a new perspective to gain and another way to realize what’s possible,” said Lee.

Stronger Together

Today, both Lee and Rich remain deeply involved in the lives of their children and grandchildren. They’ve continued pushing themselves, staying active, and proving that limb loss does not mean the end of the activities and relationships that matter most.

Their friendship serves as a powerful reminder that recovery is not just about learning to walk again. It’s about finding people who understand the journey, sharing experiences, and helping one another discover what’s possible one step at a time.

With International Friendship Day coming up this weekend, we are recognizing the impact meaningful relationships and connection can have after limb loss.

When Lee lost his leg to cancer, he wasn’t just learning how to navigate life with a prosthesis—he was searching for someone who truly understood the experience. A chance encounter eventually led him to Rich, a fellow above-knee amputee, and a friendship that helped shape his recovery journey.

Read how shared experiences, peer support, and a lasting friendship helped both men stay active and focused on what’s possible.
