Comprehensive Post-Operative Care
Undergoing an amputation can be scary, which is why you can trust us to be by your side from the very beginning.
We are committed to helping you reach your full potential by providing comprehensive post-operative care starting in the first few hours or days following surgery.
Our care begins with the application of a removable rigid dressing or an Immediate Post-Operative Prosthesis over your residual limb. Your surgeon will determine the most appropriate option based on your individual needs and will work directly with Hanger Clinic to ensure you receive the best care possible.
Removable Rigid Dressing (RRD)
An RRD is a hard plastic protector that can be taken on and off so your surgical site can be more carefully monitored. Based on patient feedback, we at Hanger Clinic developed a special type of RRD, called the AmpuShield®. This adjustable, removable device is often worn over a transparent silicone liner.
The benefits of using RRDs are that they help:
- Prevent your knee from bending
- Manage and reduce post-operative swelling
- Protect the surgical site
Immediate Post-Operative Prosthesis (IPOP)
Another option is an IPOP, which is applied in the operating room or shortly following surgery. An IPOP is a complete prosthesis with an upper or lower extremity socket and appropriate components attached.
Importance of Peer Support
We understand this information can be overwhelming, which is why you should try and meet with a trained peer mentor who can share their personal experience. Often times, we can coordinate a peer visit while you’re still in the hospital. That way, you can get the support, hope, and encouragement you need right away from someone who has been through it before.
